Film and Literature Blog
My creative project is a film blog that covers three main topics of the course. There’s a total of ten entries and four categories. Throughout the course we read articles concerning the various forms of adaptions, remakes of foreign films, and adaptions of graphic novels. The fourth category is a review of a modern film that depicts a mix cultures and genres. These film reviews are an assortment of scene analysis, major theme analysis, pictures, gifs, and film trailers.
The first category represented in my blog is “Film Adaptions of Novels.” I reviewed films based on novels or literary works. I reviewed the film adaptions of the following literary works: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John le Carre, Thérèse Raquin by Emile Zola, and The Graduate by Charles Webb. There are several themes within each film such as social class, individualism, paranoia, realism, and naturalism.
The second category is inspired by the Levin article entitled “Hollywood Remakes of French Films.” I reviewed hollywood remakes of the following films: a french film called Lol (laughing Out Loud) by Liza Azuelos, a Franco-Italian film called La Cage aux Folles (based on a French play), and South Korean film titled Oldboy (based on a Japanese manga series).
The third category of my blog is dedicated to graphic novels. I reviewed films by directors studied in the course (e.g. Abdellatif Kechiche and Marjane Satrapi). The films I reviewed are Blue is the Warmest Color adapted from graphic novel by Julie Maroh and Chicken with Plums adapted from Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel.
The fourth category is a review of the film A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night by director Ana Lily Amirpour. It is an Iranian-American film which is similar to the topic of mixed cultures like those of Chinese novelist Dai Sijie who is considered Franco-Chinese and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis which is a French-Iranian film.
The creativity of the project stems from the actual building and creation of the blog. Each film review took a minimum of three hours. I had to take into consideration the time it took to watch the film, taking notes during the film, gathering information (e.g. name of director, date released, country), gathering pictures/gifs, doing google searches on film adaptions and remakes, writing the review, and also creating the structure of the blog.
